#RPGaDay2025 - 8 Explore

Exploring a character within a group, exploring a world as a group. These are the things that truly make roleplaying games an experience that is different from most others. I love the idea of getting to know things from an experiential perspective, it feels more real. Exploring the unknown, exploring the known but discovering new things along the way that might have been overlook on the first time through.

With this in mind whenever I develop a game, I try to ensure there are adequate tools for these types of exploration, but there are also the opportunities to leave these tools behind if they get in the way. This all echoes back to my 3-way tension beliefs, to get good tension in an RPG, you need the rules, the GM/Narrator, and the players all influencing the outcome and bringing their own concepts to the exploration, so that way no single person knows all the facts, and no single element dominates the flow of the story. It allows everyone to explore within the session, no matter who they are.

It’s a fine balance, but always something worth striving for.
